In our latest Meet the Team feature, we meet Technical Development Manager Graeme Hind. We asked Graeme to tell us a little about his role and what he enjoys most about working at Hutchison Technologies.
About the role…
Graeme has a diverse, semi-fluid role that includes AV and event lighting system and solution design, developing custom solutions and software, product testing, and reviewing existing processes. Internally, Graeme provides third line support to the Helpdesk, supports our AV and IT Project teams, and partners with engineers on-site with commissioning of projects.
He said, “I am passionate about programming, custom development and problem solving, and those are the key features of my role – so I’m very happy. The work is extremely diverse, so every day is different – and I am also given extensive creative freedom to research and work with new technologies that could yield improvements or enhancements for our customers or internal teams.”
In the immediate short-term, Graeme is focused on an exciting ‘game changer.’ He said, “At the moment, I am exploring how we can securely and remotely interface with on-site equipment to pre-emptively identify any issues and resolve them, and also, how we can resolve issues more quickly and efficiently for our customers. As part of this, I am also exploring how everything can come together in a single, interconnected ecosystem.”
About the company…
Graeme describes himself as a problem solver working for a solution creating company. He said, “I actually think Hutchison Technologies is an industry leader at solving our customer’s problems and creating innovative solutions for them. Our customers will have a need – that’s the problem – and we gather the information, look at it from every angle, design a concept – that’s the solution – and then deliver it for them.
“And if you think about the different organisational roles, we are all problem solvers here. How can our Marketing team best demonstrate our expertise, how can our Sales team influence our customers, how/when can Procurement source kit, how can our Installation team integrate on-site, and how can we teach customers to use everything. Post-installation, how can our Helpdesk and Service Engineers identify and address any faults? People who love technology are attracted to this business and then immerse themselves in the work.”
Similarly, to our Kieran Hollins [LINK], Technical Director Mark Hutchison was also directly responsible for recruiting Graeme. He said, “6 years ago, I was working at the local students union in the events technical team when Mark unexpectedly reached out to discuss a Project Manager role he was looking to fill. His knowledge was really impressive, he was so passionate about the company and the work that we do – that really sold it for me. I’ve never looked back, and have recommended Hutchison Technologies to others as a great place to work.”
About Graeme…
Outside of work, Graeme is something of an adrenaline junkie. A competitive skateboarder in his youth, Graeme enjoys snowboarding during the colder months and downhill mountain biking when its warmer. He said, “I’ve recently gotten my son into extreme sports also – so he’s turning into a bit of an adrenaline junkie himself. I always think it’s better when you get your kids involved in what you love.”
Graeme enjoys Turkish food and will treat himself to the occasional Punk IPA. He enjoys researching different strategies and methods to allow innovative technology to be implemented at work. He said, “Whenever I do any reading, it’s always some sort of technical research or pages of code extracts from Stack Overflow. I told you that I love what I do!”
He’s also a big Star Wars fan. He said, “I’ve always loved Star Wars, surprisingly even after it was acquired by Disney and expanded. I think i probably associate most closely with Obi-Wan Kenobi. He has a strong moral compass and remains committed to what he believes in.”
And now for something surprising…
Believe it or not, Graeme’s a DIY enthusiast who is single-handedly redesigning and renovating his own house!
He said, “It actually started about three years ago, during the pandemic and evolved from there. I began thinking about what we could do with the house, I researched, then started my own DIY home renovation project. I am not going to lie; I’ve had a few sleepless nights worrying – especially if there’s a new and unexpected creak in the night. But I love doing it – much to my wife’s dismay.”
