Our people make Hutchison Technologies a great place to work and we’re pleased to shine the spotlight on another member of our talented team. In our latest Meet the Team feature, we meet AV/IT Technician Kieran Hollins. We asked Kieran to tell us a little about his role and what he enjoys most about working at Hutchison Technologies.

About the role…

As AV/IT Technician, Kieran has a wide-ranging role that includes testing hardware (PCs, servers, iPads), supporting engineers on-site with commissioning AV and lighting, working as part of Helpdesk’s 3rd line team, liaising with colleagues in Sales and Projects, and evaluating new/alternative equipment.

He said, “One of the things I like best about my role is the diversity – there’s so much to do and no two days are ever the same! Another aspect that I really enjoy is being able to problem solve – you have to think in different and creative ways all the time.”

In the immediate short-term, Kieran is focused on a sustainability project that could have wide-reaching implications. He said, “At the moment, I’m looking at how equipment can be used in a more sustainable way. Is it being used as efficiently as possible? When can it go into sleep mode? When can it be switched off? Does everyone have the knowledge to use the equipment in the most efficient and sustainable way? This could save our customers money, which is really important in the current economic context – but it could also help with climate change. In addition to our customers, we could also use this approach within Hutchison and share externally as industry best practice. It’s also a practical example of what I love about my role – thinking outside of the box!”

In the longer term, Kieran is continuing to absorb information from longer-serving colleagues. He said, “I’ve been in the team for about a year now and I’m eager to get to the same level as the other guys. That additional knowledge will help as I look to add value in other business areas like how we diversify our products and solutions and move into adjacent markets.”

About Kieran…

Outside of work, Kieran enjoys rock climbing, going to the gym and plays guitar in his alt-rock band ‘Jungle Cats’. His favourite food is curry (well, anything that has a ‘kick to it’).

His favourite podcast is ‘Off Menu’ with comedians Ed Gamble and James Acaster. Kieran said, “I’d really recommend it. Ed and James invite different guests into their ‘restaurant’ to each choose their favourite starter, main course, side dish, dessert, and drink. It’s the interesting conversations and stories that really make it funny to listen to.”

And what would Kieran be if he wasn’t an AV/IT Technician at Hutchison Technologies? “Maybe a professional musician. Or building software that incorporates music. Probably not too far from what I’m doing now actually – so that makes me feel quite fortunate and happy!”

And now for something surprising…

So, how did Kieran pop up on Hutchison’s radar? Well, that’s an interesting one.

Kieran said, “Technical Director Mark Hutchison actually reached out to me on LinkedIn! It was during the global pandemic, and I was working in different odd jobs. I’d studied software development at Glasgow Caledonian University and had a background in sound engineering – I enjoy understanding how different systems work. I was interested in AV and always loved coding. Anyway, Mark asked me if I was interested in a summer internship, and I started on the Helpdesk 2nd line. Fast forward two years and I’m still here – now with the Technical team. I’m also now doing a graduate apprenticeship in software at Dundee University – so I feel incredibly fortunate.”
