Meet the Team - Technical Development Manager, Bas van Tuijl

In our latest Meet the Team feature, we shine a light on Technical Development Manager Bas van Tuijl. We asked Bas to tell us a little more about his role and what he enjoys most about working at Hutchison’s.

So, Bas, tell me a little about yourself…
I was born in Norway to Dutch parents but grew up in Aberdeen; I’m what’s known as an ‘oil baby’. I studied creative sound production at college and university; that encompassed everything to do with audio including live sound, studio-based recording, and acoustics.

I started working for Hutchison’s almost eight years ago as a Project Manager. I became a Technical Development Manager as I got more involved in commissioning audio systems, designing front end apps and integrating lighting systems.

Outside of work, I’m interested in photography and mountain biking.

Tell us a little about your role at Hutchison Technologies?
My job is to look at a space and understand the experience the client wants to create for their customers, and then work out the system needed to produce that, within the constraints of the budget. That includes audio and lighting, both aesthetics and functionality. I also work closely with our team in China to bring audio visual and lighting products to the UK marketplace.

What recent industry trends have you noticed emerging from the global health crisis?
A trend we have noticed during the past year is the shift to home studio systems and streaming solutions across the health and fitness sector. This allows operators to deliver a similar in-club experience outside of the facility.

Some of the larger operators were already providing a comprehensive range of on-demand streaming solutions directly to members and other, smaller operators. As a result of the disruption caused by coronavirus, many of these smaller operators are innovating and producing their own content. We are supporting them to achieve high quality production values and deliver great customer experiences beyond the traditional in-club experience.

What has been the most enjoyable moment of your career with Hutchison’s?
I love it when a client comes to us with a very specific set of requirements and asks us to customise a solution. It’s great to be involved at the very beginning and think creatively about the problem; to understand the client request and the customer journey they’re hoping to create; to creatively problem solve and develop robust, cost-effective solutions that meet and even exceed customer expectations.

Why should people and companies choose Hutchison’s?
I think there are a few things that help Hutchison’s really stand out. Hutchison’s has project managers to ensure projects are delivered on time and on budget, but also a team of technical specialists who commission everything and ensure it works the way the client expects. We have the technical ability to create something from scratch, so we don’t just do ‘off the shelf’ products and solutions. Additionally, we partner closely with our clients and invest time in building good relationships. A lot of clients come to us through word of mouth.
