Jim Ray, Financial Controller

Our people make Hutchison Technologies a great place to work and we’re pleased to shine the spotlight on another member of our talented team. In our latest Meet the Team feature, we meet Financial Controller Jim Ray. We asked Jim to tell us a little about his role and what he enjoys most about working at Hutchison Technologies.

Tell us a little about yourself

I was born in Dundee and grew up in Monifieth. After leaving school, I worked in retail for six years, before deciding I wanted a change of career. When I was 21, I decided to return to full-time education and gained my degree in Accounting. In 1997, I moved to Montrose and have been there ever since. I’ve worked in Finance for over 25-years, gaining valuable experience in different industries, in both the public and private sectors.

Tell us about the main aspects of your role

As Financial Controller, I am primarily responsible for providing accurate and timely company records by managing the accounting function. My duties include owning the financial close process and producing financial statements and reports to guide decision-making.

What’s the best thing about your job?

I enjoy using my knowledge and experience in Finance and Accounting to ensure financial transactions are recorded accurately and on time, and how that can support good decision-making. I strive to use my communication and leadership skills to share my knowledge and expertise with my team and give them direction when required.

What makes you stay at Hutchison Technologies?

In my short time here, I have enjoyed working with people from across the business. We’re all dedicated to helping the business improve and achieve its ambitious growth goals.

If coronavirus is a teacher, what has it taught you?

Despite the differences and distance between places, we’re all fighting the same virus. It’s a reminder of just how interconnected our world economy and societies are today. Everyone has had to draw on similar skills over the past few years, such as adaptability, resilience, positivity, tenacity, and empathy. There’s no doubt that challenges brought about by the pandemic have also impacted on people’s mental wellbeing, reminding all of us about the importance of monitoring and maintaining our mental health, and our physical health.
